Love this Daniel! It reminded me of a few things - the prestige if you had music video channels at home. I eventually had VH1 and would just sit there, glued to it. But when I went to university I didn’t even have a TV so it wasn’t until YouTube that I was able to go back and see the videos that had been made during that period. They just weren’t shown again like they are now!
Also those evening sessions with Jo Whiley and Steve Lamacq. I remember my brother sending me a tape he’d recorded of them playing Elastica’s Connected, which is the first time I’d heard them. This seems such a strange way to fine new music now that I can hardly believe it was real! Thanks for the reminder.
Yes, I forgot about the prestige factor! Sounds like we had similar situations, I went to university and had no TV, and after entering the real world MTV and VH1 started moving away from music videos.
Among my mixtape collection are quite a few Evening Session recordings, I still listen to them from time to time, stuff like the Charlatans, Echobelly, probably even things I'm ashamed of like Whigfield and Danni Minogue (I really shouldn't be admitting this, there goes my street cred).
I'm having coffee with Susannah this week, will let you know how she's getting on 😄
Thanks, Andy. I don't recall hearing it in a film, but I think one of their later tracks, Stop Your Crying, was (but I forget which). I can still vividly picture where I was when I heard Ladies and Gentleman... and I still have an older version recorded from the radio somewhere on a tape. Originally the lyrics included 'Can't Help Falling in Love', but because of copyright, they had to change it. One more benefit of making a mix tape - I don't think that original version exists anywhere these days (now watch someone prove me wrong...).
This is brilliant , I love the father daughter chat so much, it made me laugh and reminisce about the days gone by. My boyfriend at the time would spent hours making me mixed tapes 🥺 I also loved the bangles, my favourite song is eternal flame, in my youth if I so happened to be near karaoke, this was my song 😁 oh yeah and when I was young (def not anymore, people used to say I looked like Susannah Hoff) 🤣🤣 I’m gonna get your book on my audio now so I can listen on my way to work. Great post
Thanks for the kind words, Francis 😊 Do you still have any of those mix tapes? I actually brought back a few of my own from an ex-girlfriend in school, and they still really hold up well. During a particularly maudlin period a few years back, I emailed loads of old school friends out of the blue to ask whether they had the mix tapes I'd made them, and around half still did (I was chuffed!).
Happy to hear you're interested in my book, but I'm afraid there's no audio version 😢
I do have a couple of audio posts here if that will suffice for now?🤗
no sadly I do not have any of the mixed tapes, I kept all the old bits of jewellery and photos that date back 20 odd years, but I guess they got thrown out with the demise of tape recorders, lol. I ordered your book from Amazon, I look forward to reading it.
I'm not sure of sleeping through their gig is high praise or an insult! They can lull you away into another dreamlike world and I've seen them 5 or 6 times over the years. Jason Pierce isn't the best when it comes to audience interaction. Most of the shows he never said a word and the band's set was one continuous stream. A bit unnerving at first, but I got used to it.
Not in real life, no. If I had I'm sure we would've been betrothed already.
Spiritualised were on as a special guest after Primal Scream at some point in the 90s. I'd already had a skinful and they started with a wall of white light and white noise. I swear I only sat down for a minute, next thing I knew it was 2am, their set was finished and my mates were waking me up. And that's the tale of my Brixton Academy nap.
On the topic of falling asleep... I can relate. At V97 I was with my sister and best friend and I conked out before Echo and the Bunnymen came on. Missed the entire set, wasn't happy. It was early afternoon after an all-nighter.
Having a boyfriend make you a mixtape was a sign of true love!

And how is Ms Hoffs looking now I wonder?!

Lovely read, Daniel! That Spiritualised track is so, so good - I remember first hearing it in a film but can’t remember which one. Any ideas?

Ok misunderstood, I’ll get it from Amazon instead 😁

I was listening to that Spiritualised album today, how strange! Still a great album. And a great post!
Thanks. A great album indeed, I've also been listening to their most recent, Everything Was Beautiful, lately.
Hey man, I saw Susannah Hoffs first!
Oh, and I have the dubious claim to fame of sleeping through a Spiritualised gig.
Susannah? Where? In real life?

I mean, early afternoon is the perfect time for a nap. Also, I think I was at V97... but I legit can't remember
