Hell of a hook for the next three posts. Hell. Of. A. Hook.

Bit nervous now. Slight detour with my next post but those three posts are coming. It's the holidays, kinda feel bad about bringing some heavy doom and gloom onto people. Let's see what I can squeeze out.

Looking forward to Groucho Marks! And your next few pieces! I wish I could be organized enough to plan posts in advance. 🤞🏻

Oh no, believe me, I am NOT at all organised. I speak for so many other Substackers - right now, this very minute, I have EIGHT different Word documents open, and that’s the tip of the iceberg.

I seriously have like 5-6 posts I want to squeeze before the end of the year, but I know I can’t. I’m constantly juggling, tinkering - the Groucho Marks piece was meant to come out mid-November actually!

This week’s piece will be Groucho-ish though, but with less anger and more…tears. It’s been a messy year life, to say the least!

Interesting comments about learning English in a natural way - it reminded me of Sam Leith's book Write to the Point, which I always recommend to everyone. It has the most evenhanded discussion I've seen on the prescriptive Vs descriptive view on grammar and syntax 'rules.'

I've contacted Substack admin to let them know you've been hacked and that a sensible, thought-provoking comment has been written by someone purporting to be you. (Is that the correct use of 'purporting'?)

I will look for that book on Amazon right now. I'm a massive pusher of the prescriptive v descriptive thing - it's the source of many a heated...discussion with non-native speaking colleagues over the years.

Two good particularly British examples:

'I was sat at my computer...' - no, no, you can't say that!

'Were you wanting something?' - no, no you can't use 'want' with ing!

Dipshits!

“Wiseass” works too. That’s me 24/7. Or at least until my mom calls me out on my bullshit.

Are you calling me an owl? As in a wise old owl? Well, gee, uh, thanks?

I'm going for more of the wiseass approach though!

Anyway, thanks, appreciate that.

I’ve decided nothing makes sense on Substack anymore ! And I think the ones with costs and paywalls are probably being pushed more by the algorithm?? And my other thoughts are this platform is filled with incredible writers only, not many non writers ? So it’s writers who subscribe and if they are subscribed to hundreds of other writers they get overwhelmed, it’s too many to read ! So they pick a few . What do you think ? I could say more but I better not 😂 either way this made me laugh so much , when I get a mo , I also go back through yours

There is a massive problem on Substack, and it's that there are just WAY too many great writers (and I'm very much including you in this!). It can be overwhelming, but I've worked out a system that works for me. The TL;DR version (I use this TL;DR thing a lot now, I learnt it from millennials!): I read what I want, ignore the rest 🤣

I have more to say, but it's a bit nerdy and technical for now and I might ask the entire community for their feedback.

Glad you enjoyed it, so lovely to hear. Bizarrely, this post has a ridiculously low 'open rate' compared to all my other ones. I wonder why. Did people see 'Central Asia' and 'derring-do' and just click on 'delete'?

I'm not so sure my mother will be thrilled to see the festive one, but knowing that will inspire me to make it as OTT as possible! (such a guilty pleasure, isn't it, winding up family members? 🤣😂)
