Note for subscribers: to get the full experience of these posts, with pictures loading properly, the chance to vote in polls, like and comment, and listen to audio, read this in your browser or the Substack app. It’s a much better reading experience, I promise!
You can also generate a transcript to follow along - language learners may find some new vocabulary and everyone else will be able to decipher my mumbling and incoherence.
In my previous post, I talked about how befuddled I was by finding out the true meaning of Netflix and Chill. It’s also, apparently, outdated. Keeping up with this stuff is hard.
Thankfully, I’m not alone. As part of my research, I checked Reddit and discovered that there are plenty of people equally bamboozled. It also turns out that a shocking number of people, apparently, don’t know what getting laid means. (I mean, surely, that’s…I don’t know what to think anymore…)
Inspired by my dining companions in Bratislava a couple of weeks ago, this is a short(ish) audio post/podcast for your amusement. Around the 7:30 mark, I start to ramble (surprise, surprise) and I think I repeat ‘it’s just a bit of fun, banter, a good laugh, taking the piss’ again and again. If I knew how to edit audio files, I could tidy that part up or just delete it, but…in my excuse, I’m a cranky old Gen Xer, which is also something I mention 4 or 5 times.
I mentioned Root Stories by Miranda W (highly recommended!), and it was this post where I read about the thumbs up being understood differently by the younger generation:
“Leave me a comment, send me an email, or even just post a pass-agg GenX thumbs up. (Did you know that that most innocuous of quick response affirmation emojis is considered rude and aggressive by “young” people? It was news to me.)”
The article Miranda links to is here: The thumbs-up emoji isn’t passive-aggressive – Gen Z need to get over it
This, by the way, is a bazooka. If you want to know why I’m including this picture, you’ll have to listen to find out. Sorry, not sorry - as millennials say. (Right? Right? No? What do I know…)
My previous post - don’t forget to vote in the poll about the opening line of my first (and probably last) novel. This is your chance to have a say in my potential fiction future. It doesn’t look promising, but please allow me to have some hope! 🤣😭😜💩
