COME ON, DANIEL!!! I have faith in you, and your dry, self-deprecating outlook brightens my day. In a very similar boat to you finance-wise, but I genuinely believe you have loads more to give. I will keep an eye out for this book! (unless you want me to beta it and try and help with a genre?)
Thank you, Hanna, glad you have faith because I'm not sure I do.
Maybe re: the beta. I'm not too fussed with pinpointing a genre, but another set of eyes might be nice. But I know you've got a ton on your plate as it is, so we'll see. I want to get this thing done in the next few days so I can send it to my current beta volunteers who are eagerly awaiting my masterpiece.
You’re too kind - I just might then (if anything it’ll give you comic relief, not in a good writing kind of way, but a ‘what the hell is wrong with this guy?’ way 🤣)
Aww, this is so sweet, probably the loveliest comment I’ve ever received. Your dating diaries are such a hoot, they’ll make a terrific book! Go for it 🤗
Thoroughly enjoyed reading this, sharing our writing journeys has its own special propulsive power I feel. I loved the part about realising your writing already had a natural arc and that reading, and reading as a writer, is the best education we can give ourselves.
And also:
Feel you on the cash.
You are so impressively prolific.
You should definitely get out there and pitch! The query trenches are a rite of passage!
Thank you for mentioning me and the lovely photo of my book, it's truly an honour! ♥️♥️♥️
I’m only impressively prolific because I don’t know what else to do 😂
I might as well pitch, I’m just deliberating how much more time and effort - god, that sounds so lazy, I don’t mean it like that! - to put into revising it. I’m terrible for focusing on one thing at a time, but I have to get cracking on my Ukraine book asap, I’m lining up interviews and chats with people and my attention is all over the place.
"So far this year, the novel has been just one thing on my mind. I also wrote two more books and have the first draft of another one that urgently needs revising as well."
I’ve been unable to replicate the success I had in second grade, where I won a creative writing contest at my church for something I had no idea I submitted. It might have been a mistake, but it’s my only trophy.
Thanks for quoting my "maybe a compliment." (Just kidding. It was definitely a compliment. I love seeing how your writing defies constraints.) I'm not at all surprised to hear that your work seemed to have unintentionally embodied solid story arcs. You're clearly a storyteller by nature. I'm sure all the reading and analyzing you do only sharpens the skills that come naturally to you.
I think it's great you're leaving your options open and considering the traditional publishing path while still working toward self-publishing. One way or the other, get the Samuel/Groucho disastrous duo out into the world!
Well, then thank you very much for the compliment! 😁
(and the other compliments, you’re too kind, honestly 😊)
One way or another, Groucho will be unleashed on the world. Not sure about Samuel, his outlook is looking rather bleak, isn’t it? I don’t have much hope for the poor guy.
It's that pesky unreliable narrator again! There's no telling what he has up his sleeve.
Minor spoiler alert, but it's so vague that it's not a spoiler at all - there comes a point, many chapters later, when the narrator loses track of the situation and even one or two of the characters! Chaos is coming...
(I have one (1) novel idea and the thought of even trying to write it is just about insurmountable, I don't think I have one novel's worth of words in me, never mind three books in a year)
Well I also won $100 for writing as a teenager and that spoiled me forever too. Well technically it was $50 plus a crummy cell phone, even by 1999 standards, which I sold for $50 a couple years later.
I’m curious about this costume…some kind of acting in Kermit the Frog fan fiction of a questionable nature? Mascot for a toy store?

I wouldn't offer if I didn't want to 🤣
You’re too kind - I just might then (if anything it’ll give you comic relief, not in a good writing kind of way, but a ‘what the hell is wrong with this guy?’ way 🤣)
Keep going Daniel, it’s you that has inspired me to think about writing a book! My dating diaries, I’ve started ! 😃 I love everything you write.

Oh, that's all?
Dude, when do you sleep?
I don’t! 😂
I’ve been unable to replicate the success I had in second grade, where I won a creative writing contest at my church for something I had no idea I submitted. It might have been a mistake, but it’s my only trophy.
Good luck on your writing and publishing journey!
Well, congratulations on that trophy, you should be proud of that!

Oh no! That really isn't a good sign for Samuel when his author loses hope for him. 😄

Oh nice. That sounds great and so creative! Can't wait to get to that part!
how the fuck have you written so many books in one year
Simple: I don’t know what else to do!
(I have one (1) novel idea and the thought of even trying to write it is just about insurmountable, I don't think I have one novel's worth of words in me, never mind three books in a year)
Not that I need any more ideas, but if you want to share, maybe I could ghost write it for you and you could add your own comedic flair to it.
I love that you used the word "shan't" in this post!
Then you must read this: https://wendymcwaffle.substack.com/p/three-idiots-and-a-photocopier-an
Will do!

See, so you know the feeling. That early success goes to our heads and it’s all downhill from there.
A-ha - you shall just have to wait re: the costume. Barring a change of mind, that will be the subject of next week’s post.
